This visit to the Tambopata National Reserve allows you to experience Lake Sandoval, the most enchanting lake in Peru that is protected. It is home to a family of giant otters ( Pteronura brasiliensis ), this mustelid is the largest piscivorous mammal in the Neotropics and is in danger of extinction. Here we have an excellent opportunity to see them during our stay. The lake and its surroundings are populated by rainforests and flooded forests of Mauritia palms , these are home to six different species of monkeys, as well as a wide variety of colorful birds, mammals, insects, amphibians, reptiles etc.

DAY 1: INTRODUCTORY WALK, SUNSET, CAIMAN SEARCH.

Arrival

    We will wait for your arrival at the airport in the city of Puerto Maldonado, to transfer you to our office. If you have large suitcases, you can leave them at our office.

    Then we head to the river port to board a motorized boat where we will descend the Madre de Dios River to the checkpoint of the National Reserve.

    Tambopata, we will continue with a walk along a 3 km (2 mile) trail, for an estimated time of 45 minutes, during this tour you will have the opportunity to see great Variety of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, etc. Upon reaching the shores of Lake Sandoval we will board our canoes and paddle through the flooded forest of palm trees until we reach the crystalline surface of the lake. We continue exploring the lake until we reach our lodge. After lunch and a restful break, you will have an introductory walk through the immense natural wealth of our rainforest.

    Afterwards we will continue exploring the fauna of the lake and its surroundings, until the time comes to appreciate the sunset. We will remain on the lake until nightfall, where we can meet caimans. It is said that the jungle has more life at night than during the day.

DAY 2: GIANT OTTER SEARCH, CHESTNUT FOREST, OBSERVATION TOWER, NIGHT WALK.

    We woke up very early to navigate Lake Sandoval in a canoe, to observe wildlife, as well as: Birds, Hoatzin ( Opisthocomus hoazin ), fish, reptiles, varieties of squirrel monkeys, capuchin monkey, red howler monkey, etc., majestic macaws flying, we will sail in search of the family of giant otters ( Pteronura brasiliensis ) that roam the lake in a close-knit family, very active at this time of day.

    After breakfast we set out on a hike, deep into the dense vegetation where we will find a beautiful, ancient patch of Brazil nut forest that has been harvested for decades where you can experience a demonstration of the entire process of the only sustainably harvested product of the rainforest from collection to transport and market. Return to the lodge for lunch.

    In the afternoon we will visit an observation tower that will allow us to appreciate the beauty of Lake Sandoval, enjoy an impressive panoramic view of the lake and the forest that surrounds it and the immense variety of species that inhabit it.

DAY 3: PALM LICK, RETURN TO PUERTO MALDONADO.

    In the morning we head to the palm lick to spot the blue and yellow macaws that gather to eat the bark of the palm trees, we return to the lodge for breakfast.

    Then we will hike along a trail through the cool undergrowth of the impressive primary forest that surrounds the lake in search of giant trees such as the ceibas in their different varieties. Return to the lodge for lunch.

    Then we begin our return trip to the city of Puerto Maldonado. Thank you for your visit!
